Search Tips

HawkExpress.com  uses a free-style text search for easy product access.  The draw back to text searches is that the computer can not always determine exactly what you are trying to say.  Most search phrases, such as "nokia 5120 batteries", are fairly simple and straight forward.  However, we start getting into trouble when we start using boolean keywords, such as AND, OR, and NOT.  Therefore, we must use computer friendly search phrases.  For example, if you say "red and purple faceplate", the computer thinks you are saying everything red plus purple faceplates.  To clearly get your point across, use "purple faceplate and red faceplate".  Also, you may expect this to return all of the red faceplates and all of the purple faceplates, but it will not.  This search will return all the products that have the words red, purple, and faceplates in their description.  If you want all the red and all the purple faceplates you must use "red faceplate or purple faceplate".  What if you want all faceplates except the purple ones, use "faceplate not purple".  There is one more problem to work around, faceplate and faceplates are two different words.  The best way to handle this issue, is to use the wildcard character, * (Shift + 8).  You would then use "faceplate* not purple" or "nokia 5120 batter*".

Tips Summary

ANDThe keyword AND is used to find products with descriptions containing all the words on either side of the AND.  For example, "batteries and purple faceplate" will return all products that have a description containing the words "batteries", "purple", and "faceplate".  Also, if you are trying to find purple faceplates and red faceplates, use the OR keyword instead of AND.  The keyword AND will return faceplates that are both red and purple, not red or purple.
ORThe keyword OR is used to find products with descriptions containing either word on either side of the OR.  For example, "red faceplate or purple faceplate" will return all of the red faceplates and all of the purple faceplates.  If you use "red and purple faceplate", the result will be all products that have red in the description and all products that have purple faceplate in the description.
NOTThe keyword NOT is used to exclude a word.  For Example, "faceplate not purple" will return all products that have faceplate in their description, but not those that have faceplate and purple in the description.
Wildcard *The asterisk, *, is a wildcard.  Wildcards can be used to take the place of unknown letters.  For example, if we want to be sure that we see all products that may have faceplate or faceplates in their description, use "faceplate*".  If you are looking for batteries, use "batter*".  This is also helpful when searching for products grouped by series, such as the 5100 series Nokia phones.  To search for a charger for your Nokia 5120, use "nokia 51* charger".
