Sealed subwoofer enclosures - Sealed subwoofer boxes offer the most control over subwoofer movement and will handle more power than other enclosure types.  Sealed sub woofer enclosures provide the best sound quality, highest frequency response, but are not as loud as other box types.  Sealed subwoofer enclosures are always smaller than other types of enclosures and are well suited for all types of music.  A sealed subwoofer enclosure is simply an air-tight wooden box with the speaker mounted inside.

Ported subwoofer enclosures - Ported subwoofer boxes provide slightly less sound quality than sealed subwoofer enclosures, but more than bandpass sub woofer boxes.  The ported subwoofer enclosure also produces a higher output and more volume than the sealed subwoofer enclosure, but less than that of the bandpass subwoofer enclosure.  With the ported enclosure, you get a strong lower mid-bass sound, but less deep bass.  Ported subwoofer enclosures are typically larger boxes then the sealed enclosure with a round port behind the speaker.

Bandpass subwoofer enclosures - Bandpass boxes offer the greatest output available from amp/sub woofer combinations and are designed to give the greatest possible output from any subwoofer.  Bandpass enclosures are usually fairly large.  Bandpass boxes are a combination of vented subwoofer enclosures and sealed subwoofer enclosures.  Bandpass subwoofer enclosures are sealed boxes with the subwoofer mounted inside and a ported, or vented, box up front.  The bandpass enclosure does not have the sound quality or frequency range that is characteristic of other enclosures, but are best suited for "cage rattling", "mind numbing" bass.
